Chapter 18

"Yaya, did you see that? Isn't he very handsome? How do you think I should get to know him? I wonder if he has a partner."

Bai Huanhuan's eyes were all on Lin Zhibai, and she didn't notice the change in Lin Ya's mood at all.

Lin Ya was annoyed by her pulling her arm, but she couldn't shake it off. Suddenly, she remembered something and pretended to understand, "So it was him."

  "Why, Yaya, you know him."

"Yes, of course I know him. He and I grew up in the same compound. But Huanhuan, he...is not suitable for you."

Lin Ya's face didn't look very good, as if she had something to hide, which aroused Bai Huanhuan's curiosity.

  "Yaya, do you know something?"

After Bai Huanhuan's repeated questioning, Lin Ya finally told the "reason" for the sake of her good friend's future.

So, Bai Huanhuan learned from Lin Ya that Lin Zhibai was the one who framed his cousin to go to the countryside, abandoned his parents, and used backdoors in order to study at Capital University.

"I didn't expect that Lin Zhibai, who looks so refined and elegant, would actually do such a thing. He looks gorgeous on the outside but is actually rotten inside."

“Yaya, luckily I have you, otherwise I would have been deceived.”

Bai Huanhuan clenched her fists and stared at Lin Zhibai who was still reading a book not far away. It was true that one couldn't judge a person by his appearance.

"Well, let's go. If you meet him next time, stay away from him."

Lin Ya looked at Lin Zhibai deeply, then turned and left with Bai Huanhuan.

Bai Huanhuan's parents were well-known figures in the capital, and their family background was good. This was also the reason why Lin Ya was willing to put aside her pride and patience and be friends with her. How could such a good partner be given to Lin Zhibai? He didn't deserve it.

  -

Lin Zhibai looked up to the window and found that it was already dark. He closed the book and put it in his cross-body bag. He left the library and walked towards the cafeteria, but he was stopped by someone after taking a few steps.

"Lin Zhibai, let's find a place to talk."

Looking at the familiar face of the girl in front of him, with the undisguised arrogance and disdain in her eyes, the ease and comfort on Lin Zhibai's face disappeared, gradually becoming cold and silent for a moment. Then he followed Lin Ya to a corner of a remote woods.

Lin Ya was brought up in a pampered environment. She inherited her parents' good looks, and with her conscious maintenance, she was very popular among boys. She was sweet-talking and could make the elderly happy, and was very much liked by the elders.

However, from childhood to adulthood, all her malice was directed at Lin Zhibai.

Lin Ya crossed her arms and looked up and down at the person in front of her. He had a fair and handsome face, rosy cheeks, a clean white shirt and black pants, and a tall figure. If it weren't for the familiar facial features, she would have found it difficult to associate the person in front of her with the old Lin Zhibai.

Lin Zhibai, who once lived under someone else's roof, was thin. Although his skin was fair, it got an unhealthy paleness. He looked sick and often fell ill.

As for why Lin Ya hated Lin Zhibai, she couldn't explain it. Maybe she didn't want a stranger to break into her home, or maybe it was because she lived in a privileged family and thought she was superior to others, so she looked down on people like Lin Zhibai who were despised by everyone.

"Lin Zhibai, aren't you in the countryside? Why did you come to the capital?"

"Why did you come to Capital University to study? What have you done in the past few years?"

Lin Ya's questioning was not out of concern for Lin Zhibai, but out of curiosity, questioning, and a hint of reluctance.

"It has nothing to do with you." Lin Zhibai spoke in a cold and hard tone. Except for a momentary change at the beginning, his expression remained indifferent, as if the person in front of him was just an unimportant person.

After saying that, Lin Zhibai turned sideways and was about to leave. Lin Ya, who was met with a cold face, couldn't believe it and reached out to hold him. After a moment, she quickly let go of his hand as if she was stained by garbage and wiped it off.

"You are not allowed to leave. Answer me."

"Lin Ya, I'm not your servant, so I don't have to listen to you."

"You used to eat at my house, live at my house, and my mother arranged your schooling. We've been so good to you, are you going to be ungrateful?"

Lin Zhibai, who had just taken a step, paused, stayed where he was, turned around and looked at Lin Ya. His past memories were exposed nakedly, and Lin Zhibai just felt ridiculous.

There was a hint of sarcasm at the corner of his lips, and his voice was as cold as ice.

"Ungrateful? Don't you think these four words are ironic? Being good to me? Eating leftovers and wearing tattered clothes, is that being good to me? But I don't care about these. After all, I am living under someone else's roof. It doesn't matter if I lack food and clothing. As long as I can have enough food and clothing and not starve or freeze, that's enough. I am grateful. I do odd jobs after studying and give the money I earn to grandma.

I was able to study through my own hard work, and I earned my own tuition. I didn't spend a single cent of your family's money. Even so, I think that after all, your family and I are blood relatives, and we have a bond. But this bond was completely lost when you didn't ask for my opinion and asked me to go to the countryside in place of my cousin."

In fact, Lin Zhibai was not very opposed to going to the countryside. He was just angry that they treated him like an object and could decide his destination at will without asking his opinion.

Once upon a time, he also thought about integrating into them, pleasing his grandparents, his uncle and aunt, and his cousins, but as he grew up, he realized that this was their home and would never be his home. His, Lin Zhibai's home,  was gone when his parents passed away.

When he went to the countryside, he met Meng Xiangbei. It was the long-lost warmth he felt after his parents passed away. He was like a drowning man grabbing a life-saving straw, unwilling to let go.

Meng Xiangbei is the only salvation in his life , so much so that there were messages circulating in the village. When Meng Xiangbei was cold to him, he was in pain, uncomfortable, and at a loss. He even wondered if he would die if Meng Xiangbei broke up with him.

Fortunately, he was not abandoned, he was cherished and came to the capital to realize his dream.

"So, Lin Ya, I don't owe your family anything." Lin Zhibai said firmly. Not only did he not owe anything, he even suspected that his parents' death had something to do with his uncle.

Lin Ya gritted her teeth and trembled with anger.

In the past, Lin Zhibai was timid and had no sense of existence. Even when he was accused and bullied, he would never say a word. When had she ever seen Lin Zhibai so eloquent?

She wanted to refute, but she knew that what Lin Zhibai said was true, even about his parents' death...

Lin Ya vaguely recalled the conversation between her father and her grandparents that she had overheard.

Lin Zhibai easily caught the panic and guilt in Lin Ya's eyes.

Sure enough, the death of my parents...

Lin Zhibai suppressed his surging anger, closed his eyes, and said, "Don't show up in front of me anymore in the future."

It was quiet at night. Lin Zhibai opened his eyes. In the dim light, his bloodshot couldn't be seen. He tossed and turned several times but couldn't fall asleep.

As soon as he closed his eyes, the events of that year are still vivid in his mind

He thought he didn't care, but when he saw Lin Ya today, he still felt uncomfortable in his chest.
